Treasury and Investment Students – Austrian Champions in Equity Research
On Friday, 1st March a team of students from the Treasury and Investment specialisation in the English master programme Business Consultancy International won the Austrian final of the CFA Research Challenge. They will be representing Austria in the EMEA final that will be held in Zurich in April.
The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual, global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis. Students work in teams to research and analyze a publicly traded company and then write a research report on their assigned company with a buy, sell, or hold recommendation. This year in the Austrian final the students’ task was to analyse S IMMO AG.
The winning team from FHWN are: Marlene Eibensteiner, Moritz Elser, Florian Kargl, Shahar Kenan and Nora Nagy. They have been guided by an industry mentor, Harald Egger, CFA and a faculty advisor, Dr. Kinga Niemczak.
The competition from other universities was very strong. Our students had to demonstrate not only profound knowledge of equity valuation tools and excellent financial analysis skills, but also exceptional presentation skills as they had to pitch their recommendation in front of a panel of judges - professionals from the investment industry. This achievement was only possible thanks to their rigorous preparation, professionalism and excellent collaboration within the team.
Congratulations to the winning team and best of luck at the EMEA finals!
Marketing Analytics students support Vienna museums
As part of their Consumer Insights course, students of the Master programme Business Consultancy International (specialisation: Marketing Analytics ) implemented a marketing project for the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts (MAK).
On the basis of empirical market research, the students developed recommendations and ideas for the museums in order to increase brand awareness among tourists and the local population. The scientific support from the students included qualitative interviews and focus groups. "The practical projects allowed our students to gain valuable insights into the multifaceted world of cultural marketing and further strengthened their market research and consulting skills. " explained Dr. Karin Dobernig, research assistant in the Department of Marketing & Sales.
The questions the students worked with were diverse: What do people associate with the term MAK / Museum of Applied Arts? What are the main reasons to visit a museum? Why do foreign tourists visit the Kunsthistorisches Museum? The project was a great challenge for the students. "The course provides a great opportunity to understand the complexity of customer behavior and apply multi-dimensional insights into a user-centered design process for real customers. It was a challenging, but interesting and rewarding experience, " said student My Tran Thai.
The students received support and intensive coaching from user experience design expert Markus Murtinger (USECON) and design thinking specialist Stephanie Ogulin (ambuzzador).

L’Oréal Brandstorm 2018
A close competition!
L’Oréal Austria hosted the National Finals of the annual L’Oréal Brandstorm Competition this May in Vienna. For the first time, FHWN had two teams taking part in the finals from the Business Consultancy International degree programme. The competition was very intense with finalists from 7 different Universities, all competing for the coveted National Final prize and the chance to go to Paris for the finals in June.
Students were asked to evaluate the salon experience for L’Oréal Professional products and come up with new and revolutionary ideas to create a unique and modern salon experience that would deliver real value for the salon, their clients, and L’Oréal. Many ideas were presented which involved innovative make-overs, digital and personalised solutions.
The BCi teams consisted of Bachelor students Carina Loidl, Mariella Ondrejka, Nicole Votava, and Master students Daria Akoshali, Anastasia Kuryatenko, and Isabelle Rittinghaus. In the end, the Bachelors team received 2nd place, and the Masters team 3rd place. A real achievement from 8 great teams. We are very proud of their performance and thankful for representing the university so well. Well done!
Capstone Project 2018
This year we had the privilege of holding the Capstone Final Presentations at the fantastic Expat Center of the Vienna Business Agency in Vienna’s first district. The event, which took place on 17 May 2018, was attended by the Capstone companies, students and faculty, as well as our panel of judges. Throughout their last semester our Master’s students, specialising in Marketing Analytics and Treasury and Investment, had the task to work as junior consultants for start-up companies. Students worked on a variety of high level tasks including conducting detailed market research, working on improving brand awareness, developing market entry strategies, and outlining new digital marketing initiatives.
The Capstone judges, Dr. Mitra Arami (Head of Institute Entrepreneurship, FHWN) and Mr. Peiman Zamani (Division Manager, Creative Pre-Incubator) had a difficult time in selecting a winner, as the tasks varied enormously, and the performance of all teams was very high. This year’s winning team was team Simax consisting of Hanna Yelistratova from Ukraine, Vincent Paquette from Canada, and Bálint Kele from Hungary. Simax is a software system that translates text and videos into sign language for deaf people. Their team undertook market research in the pharmaceutical industry, identified potential business partners, and came up with a business development strategy for the company SignTime.
We are very grateful to the companies who allowed our students to apply what they have learned in a real life consultancy setting, and we are especially grateful to Accent Gründerservice GmbH for sponsoring our final awards night.
MBCi Thesis Defensio in the Future Lab
In the last semester our Master students are asked to defend their thesis projects in front of colleagues and faculty members. The first Thesis Defensio of the new specialisations Treasury and Investment and Marketing Analytics took place on 8 and 9 May, 2018. For the first time ever, students who were on an exchange semester could present their thesis without the need to travel to the University in Wiener Neustadt. They had the chance to join the session and present their findings via Skype for Business. We had a group of students who presented on campus while others joined from remote locations like New Delhi, India and San Diego, United States.
Thanks to the modern technology our students could save up travelling time and financial resources. The only hardship for them was to cope with the time difference. This interactive session was a good start of utilising modern technology in the class room.
