Wiener Neustadt and its surroundings
With more than 40,000 inhabitants, Wiener Neustadt is the regional centre of south-east Lower Austria. Due to the presence of the Regional Innovation Centre, the Technology Centre Wiener Neustadt, the Fachhochschule, Lower Austria's largest venue »Arena Nova« and the business park »Civitas Nova«, Wiener Neustadt has excellent prospects for the future.
It is the seat of the local government, an administrative centre, a traffic hub for railways, motorways and main roads, as well as the second largest shopping city in the province. It is also the largest student city in Lower Austria: In addition to the city's own students, there are about 15,000 students who commute to Wiener Neustadt's schools on a daily basis. Additionally, Wiener Neustadt is a garrison town with Austria's only training centre for officers of the Austrian army, the Theresian Academy.
The city offers activities for young and old: There is a number of cinemas, a theatre steeped in tradition, coffee houses, restaurants, and bars. Wiener Neustadt has become famous for its »Spring in Wiener Neustadt« festival where many cultural events take place during the months of March until June - outdoor pop concerts by famous rock groups, open air concerts by the Philharmonic Orchestra or operas performed by the ensemble of Verona on the local church square. Besides a bustling city centre with quaint shops, crooked streets and outdoor coffee houses, there are several parks located in the city .
Wiener Neustadt is surrounded by a breathtaking mountainous region, the so-called »Magic Mountains«. The entire region of the Rax, Schneeberg and Schneealpe mountains is a protected nature and water reserve - an intact alpine world that beautifully embraces the town of Wiener Neustadt. The »Magic Mountains« with their steep cliff faces, the meadows and woods offer exciting discovery tours, enabling exchange students to fully enjoy the area in all its stunning beauty - cycling or walking through it, or taking part in our skiing events.
