Open Lecture: Advanced propellants
Research and technology development activities
This presentation gives a short insight into the work on the research and technology development level, which has to be conducted to test new flowable propellant candidates within the scope of their application in propulsion systems. Energetic ionic liquids, nitrous oxide based monopropellants and gel propellants will be described as examples, which are investigated at DLR Lampoldshausen. The first two new propellant types are interesting candidates which shall replace hydrazine in satellite propulsion systems. Gel propellants combine thrust variation capability with easy handling and storage characteristics.
