Preclinical Multimodal Imaging (PMI) - Research Labs

Molecular imaging plays a central role in modern medicine as well as biomedical research to study regional or systemic tissue properties in a non-invasive manner. It comprises the real-time visualization and quantification of biochemical events at cellular and molecular level within living cells, biological and artificial tissues as well as living subjects. The application of molecular imaging techniques, comprising the development and evaluation of novel imaging biomarkers for specific biological and biochemical processes, together with traditional forms of imaging, offers the potential to provide essential comprehensive information on tumor heterogeneity beneficial to radiation therapy.

Preclinical multimodal molecular imaging and specific biomedical image quantification procedures are useful tools to foster an understanding of a tumor’s systems biology, increasing one’s knowledge of radiobiological aspects to help facilitate integration in the field of radiation therapy planning, verification and treatment monitoring.

In this context, a preclinical imaging facility comprising micro-positron-emission-tomography (µPET), micro-single-photon-emission-computed-tomography (µSPECT) and micro-computed-tomography (µCT) is implemented in the research infrastructure of the ion therapy and research center – MedAustron. Research is carried out collaboratively between the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt and the Medical University of Vienna, specifically in the field of molecular imaging sciences, medical physics and radiation biology.
